Alternatives to the "Wedding March"

Although many brides walk down the aisle to the traditional "Wedding March," that is not the only song available. Some religions won't allow that song to be played, because of the personal beliefs of the composer. Other brides just want something different or more meaningful to them. Check with your ceremony location to see if there are limits on your song choices, and decide what fits your wedding and feels right to you.

Classical

"Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," "Ave Maria," "Prelude in C" or "Sheep May Safely Graze" by Bach are all classical alternatives to the traditional "Wedding March." Other classical songs commonly used are "Air on a G String" or "Canon in D." Any classical song can be used as your personal wedding march if it sounds beautiful to you and your fiance. For more meaning, research the piece and its origin before committing to it.

Movie Soundtracks

Some couples opt for songs from movies or soundtracks that they enjoy. For example, the "Star Wars" theme song is a favorite among avid fans. "Lord of the Rings" offers another option. Songs that sound triumphant, regal and classic tend to be chosen. On the other hand, romantic ballads such as "Come What May" from "Moulin Rouge" may work better for some couples.

Your Song

Any song can be used, even an instrumental version of your favorite song. Many couples choose "their" song, or a love song that rings true to them, but you can use any song you'd like. "November Rain" by Guns N' Roses, particularly the opening instrumental part, is frequently used, as is "Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion and "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong. Pick a song that moves you emotionally, and it'll feel perfect.

Compose Your Own

For the musically talented and adventurous, compose your own song. If you don't have the means, time or ability, consider entrusting a loved one who does. Or enlist the help of a student attending a musical or arts college. A one-of-a-kind song to incorporate into your wedding may be the best choice, if you truly desire something different.
