Most people's career choices are determined by two important factors: interest and pay. While interest certainly is an important aspect of a profession, it is also important to ensure that you get a good return on your investment of time, effort and money into your training and work. There are institutes and professional bodies that conduct surveys and studies to determine the highest-paid professions in the country, and the U.S. Department of Labor is one such professional body.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare field is one of the largest industries in the nation, employing 14.3 million people. Healthcare positions are well paid and average earnings exceed those earned by private industry employees. The rapid growth in the nation's elderly population is predicted to generate millions of new healthcare opportunities in the next decade. Many of the jobs require a certificate or an associate degree, which can be completed in about two years.
The UK has the highest salaries in Europe, with an after-tax household income of £35,730 a year in 2009, which was more than £10,000 higher than the European average. The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) carried out by the Office of National Statistics, produces information on the highest-paying jobs in the UK every year. The survey found a range of jobs paying high wages, from directors to airline pilots.
As an important transportation hub in Europe, the United Kingdom has many busy airports. For example, London Heathrow provided services for 63 million passengers in 2002 alone (see Reference 1). BAA is the leading airport operator in the United Kingdom (see Reference 2). They own six airports in the United Kingdom including the busiest, London Heathrow. There are many individuals who are responsible for making sure that passengers get to their destinations safely, which means there are various job opportunities available in U.K. airports.
