In addition to professional knowledge, zoologists must have advanced writing skills.

A zoologist is a biological scientist responsible for the study of lifecycles, origin, interactions, environments and diseases of animals. To become a zoologist -- like any other branch of science -- requires at least three years of study at a tertiary level. Zoologists may end up working in the field in remote, harsh and isolated environments, they may end up conducting research in a laboratory or they may end up in academia, teaching and researching.

  1. Grants and Applications

    • All zoologists at some stage will have to master the art of writing effective applications for grants and research commissions. Laboratory workers, field workers and those in academia will all need to apply to various bodies for funding to conduct research or studies into areas they wish to investigate. Grant writing and applications have their own style and skills and can be very different in nature to the more scientific-focused writings that scientists may be used to.

    Research

    • Every zoologist will conduct research into his or her field of specialization, and this research is written up into detailed reports or dissertations. These are very formal scientific academic writings and will draw upon the training gained at university. These research papers and reports may be published and studied by peers and need to be extremely rigorously researched and written to ensure scientific standards are met and credibility is not compromised.

    Programs

    • Zoologists may be required to write programs that outline how to operate or run a particular area such as a zoo, an endangered animal care program, a governmental agencies policy program with regards to certain species or educational programs for students or community organizations. Zoologists can be employed in many varying fields and many require policy programs to be written or general guidelines on how to operate in a certain way.

    Technical Writing

    • The gathering and storing of technical and scientific data can be an important part of any zoologists work. To this end a big part of a zoologist's skill set is computer skills and the ability to set up and utilize data-recording programs and spreadsheets. Many zoologists take computer science courses as part of their wider studies.
