SAGE Grants

SAGE Grants provide funding for local transportation projects.

The System for Administering Grants Electronically, or SAGE, is the New Jersey Department of Transportation's portal to grants. SAGE functions as an online application system allowing applicants to apply for Department of Transportation -- or DOT -- grants electronically, in addition to offering online management of the process, from reviews to approvals. Authorized passwords are required for access to the SAGE website.

  1. SAGE Portal Authorization Codes

    • Organizations that have an authorized official registered with their county or municipality can gain access to the authorized codes to open the SAGE portal. If you are not the authorized official of your group, contact the person who holds that title for SAGE authorization codes. If you are not a county or municipality employee, or do not have a code for an authorized official regarding your group, you can sign up for a new authorization on the DOT website.

    State-Funded SAGE Grants

    • SAGE grants are funded by both state and federal sources. State-funded grants are managed by the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund. State funding assists county and municipal governments with the task of improving the state's transportation system. Funds issued by the Transportation Trust Fund have been used for bridges, roads and other local transportation projects. Municipal SAGE grants can be applied to projects such as road resurfacing, placement of traffic signal lights and other local needs. County SAGE grants can be used for projects that improve roads, public transportation and bridges under county jurisdiction. State-funded Bikeway Grants are provided to build 1,000 new miles of dedicated bike paths in New Jersey. The Safe Streets to Transit Grant provides local grants to improve public transportation hubs and access to transit facilities.

    Federally Funded SAGE Grants

    • Federally funded SAGE grants are offered to local governments and nonprofit organizations for assistance with the improvement of roads and transportation systems. The Local Scoping Grant provides federal grants to local entities for the development of transportation options that comply with the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program and National Environmental Policy Act requirements. Local Lead Program Grants fund construction with $250,000 minimum in costs, right-of-way and/or final designs for transportation projects. The Transportation Enhancement Program funds projects that promote more livable communities through the preservation of the environment and promotion of alternative transportation methods. The Safe Routes to Schools Grant provides funds to make routes to K-8 grade schools safer and more accessible. Projects that reduce traffic, ensure child safety and promote walking and biking to school are funded.

    SAGE Application Process

    • All SAGE grants must be applied for online using the SAGE system. Authorized codes must be obtained before applications may be submitted. Once proper codes are acquired, individual grant application requirements should be reviewed and submitted. While the SAGE system is used for all applications, one application is not used for all of the grants. Follow individual instructions provided for each grant application in addition to general SAGE application requirements. It is wise to review recent grant applicant projects that have won funding in the categories you intend to apply in to hone in on winning proposal techniques. A list of recent winning grants are posted on the New Jersey DOT website.
