You can build your own professional "Yu-Gi-Oh!" playing deck by carefully selecting the most versatile, useful and defensive cards in your arsenal. Standard decks should be limited to around 40 cards to ensure you have a high chance of drawing the most important cards in your deck. Make sure each card has a purpose in your deck and concentrate on the key elements of the game to improve your "Yu-Gi-Oh!" strategy.

Ignore the Show's Methods
-
The "Yu-Gi-Oh!" television show is an entertaining animated show that highlights the card game as their main theme. The show also takes artistic license to present a story entertaining to the audience and clever it is interpretation of the game. However, the show teaches players that drawing just the right card, at the right moment, is enough to win, or portrays the powers of some cards as much greater than their real counterpart. Judge your "Yu-Gi-Oh!" card deck based on the value and versatility of your cards and not on the lessons the show teaches; watch the show for its entertaining storylines.
Give Yourself Options
-
Option cards are your most valuable deck building cards. These cards allow you to draw extra cards or search your deck for just the right card. In a standard "Yu-Gi-Oh!" deck, you should include between six and eight option cards. They are your key to keeping the right cards in your hand that will give you the ability to act and react to your opponent's card choices. Use option cards early in play to establish your trap cards and bring out your offensive monsters. Later, option cards will help you sustain a defense against your opponent's deck by allowing you to select the spells and traps you will need for protection.

Don't Forget Traps
-
Play trap cards, face down, on your playing surface and activate them when one of your opponent's monsters attacks you. Your trap cards protect you from your opponent's most dangerous attacks. Some trap cards allow you to completely remove your opponent's monsters from the table. Make sure to have six to eight trap cards in your 40-card "Yu-Gi-Oh!" deck.
Creatures with Fortitude
-
Creature fortitude is a monster card's ability to remain in play after death or your ability to resummon monsters into play quickly. You achieve creature fortitude by using monster cards that, when they die, instantly resummon another monster card into play. Additionally, stock your deck with four star monster cards that are easily summoned, instead of using higher star monsters that require additional tributes to come into play.
