The banana stem of the banana plant is known as the pindi and is rich in fiber. You can eat the stem raw or cook it. The banana stem is also used for medicinal purposes because of its high fiber and vitamin content. There are several ways you can use a banana stem in your meals. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Banana Stem Raitha

    • Beat 1 cup of curd and add water if it is too thick. Remove the outer layer of the banana stem and cut the stem into round slices. Observe the stem for any fiber sticking out and remove the fiber. Cut the banana stem into smaller pieces and place it in the curd. Add salt to taste and heat 1 tbsp. of oil. Add oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves and asafoetida into a bowl and mix. Pour over the curds and serve.

    Banana Stem and Coconut

    • Clean, cut and chop up a banana stem. Place the stem in a pan and cover with water. Simmer on low. Grind up coconut, shallots, chilly powder, jeera powder and turmeric in a separate bowl. Heat a small amount of coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and curry leaves. Add the ground up coconut mix and add to the pan with mustard seeds and curry and fry for a couple minutes. Add the banana stem pieces and stir. Add salt to taste and serve with cooked rice.

    Banana Stem Soup Recipe

    • Create banana stem soup. Cut the banana stem into small pieces and grind. Melt butter in a pan. Saute a cup of chopped onions and 1 tbsp. ginger garlic paste for one minute. Add the ground banana stem. Add water and salt to taste. Let the mix boil. Mix corn flour and water into the pan to thicken the soup. Cook for 10 minutes and add curry leaves and black pepper. Serve hot.

    Banana Stem Juice

    • Make a banana stem drink using banana stem, water and salt. Chop up 1/4 cup banana stem. Place it in a blender. Add 1 cup water and a pinch of salt. Blend together and drain. Serve with ice.
