The Adavantages & Disadvantages of MySpace

Save

MySpace, a popular networking website, offers users an easy way to keep in touch with friends and family. Profile pages display personal background information, such as your likes and dislikes, interests and where you attended school. MySpace offers many convenient features and options to make full use of the site, but these pose as a double-edged sword in some ways. Every advantage offers an equal disadvantage, which the user must weigh to determine the site's ultimate usefulness.

Customizable

  • Unlike its biggest competitor Facebook, MySpace offers its users the ability to customize their profile pages. Backgrounds, fonts and colors are all customizable, allowing for full personalization. This freedom to change just about everything on your profile page can come at a price, as too many colors and graphics can prove distracting, making it hard to concentrate on the content on the page.

Blog Capabilities

  • MySpace offers its users an internal blog feature, to keep your thoughts and socializing in one convenient location. The site offers a direct link to your blog to help encourage family and friends to visit. The blog feature isn't as versatile and well-designed as separate blogging platforms, however, and a blind search for your blog may return undesirable -- and not-friendly-for-work-or-kids -- results.

Friend Search

  • Finding friends with MySpace's search feature requires the person's real or display name or their email address. You can also search for friends with more advanced search options, such as by lifestyle, education or age range. This search makes it easy to find new friends but can also allow for random soliciting and friending by those simply looking to increase their friends list number or promote a product or service.

Socializing and Networking

  • When you log on to your account, MySpace lists who else is online from your friends list. You can chat with other members via blogs and forums, and even invite others to play a game with you. While this ease of communication helps build and foster friendships, it can also cause problems when used to harass others in the form of cyber-bullying.

Entertainment

  • In addition to socializing, MySpace offers other forms of entertainment, such as games, videos and books. Take some time to entertain yourself, or check out the number next to the title of the game to see how many other members are currently playing and challenge someone. With dozens of games and apps to choose from, it's easy to lose track of time and spend far longer on the site than you had originally expected.
