Negative Effects of Traditional Sacrifice
Traditionally, the concept of ritual sacrifice was important in premodern religion, whether through offerings of food like grains or through blood sacrifice of living things like livestock, wild animals, and in many cases, human beings. For many reasons, this practice has fallen out of favor among the major religions and has been replaced by innocuous or symbolic sacrifice rituals.
-
Social Marginalization
-
Association with religions and cultures that practice ritual sacrifice may be seen as backward, immoral and primitive in a world that is increasingly secular. Practices like traditional ritual sacrifice are seen as alien and representative of people outside of mainstream culture, leading to rejection and ultimately, cultural persecution.
Health Risks
-
Handling the blood and viscera of slaughtered animals in communal rituals is considered very unsafe and dangerous. The most famous example of this is that study into the initial, alarming spread of HIV/AIDS in the Americas was helped in part by transmission to many hosts in animal sacrifice rituals in Haiti.
-
Cultural Taboos
-
The ethics of animal sacrifice make it repugnant to people living in modern societies, who consider such treatment of animals cruel and senseless. Occasionally, this also extends to ritual slaughter of livestock for food intended for consumption of Muslims or Jews, as secular authorities in some cultures deem these laws and practices inhumane.
Illegality
-
In many countries, such as in the U.S., practicing traditional sacrifice may actually be illegal, depending on the jurisdiction. The ultimate effect of this is that practitioners may be breaking the law, subject to fines and jail time.,This institutional stigma is intended to discourage the practice and serves to keep public opinion firmly negative towards traditional sacrifice.
