Types of Food That Use Oregano

You can easily grow your own oregano. Not only is this more affordable than dried oregano, the taste of fresh oregano is stronger and more flavorful.

Whether dried or fresh, oregano can be a wonderful addition to many dishes. Slightly bitter, oregano is a staple in many Italian and Mexican dishes. This spice works well with other spices and is frequently used in dishes that also work well with basil, garlic and marjoram. Try adding oregano to some dishes that you already cook. Remember that fresh oregano is usually much more flavorful than dried, so you will need less in recipes that require oregano. Always add a little, taste the dish and then add more if necessary. You can always add more spice, but it is nearly impossible to remove if you have added too much. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Pizza

    • Pizzas with red sauce (rather than a white or dairy-based sauce) practically demand oregano. Combine with other spices such as basil, garlic or crushed red peppers for a pizza that does not even need toppings. Spoon the sauce over the crust, cover with cheese and the spices you like, and bake until crust is crispy and the cheese is melted.

    Pasta Dishes

    • Like pizza, red sauce-based Italian pasta dishes cry out for the zip of oregano. Add a pinch of fresh or dried oregano to your sauce. When pasta is fully cooked, drain and ladle sauce over the top. You can add the vegetables or meat of your choice to the sauce while it is cooking.

    Meats

    • When baking or roasting meats such as poultry, beef and fish, you can sprinkle a bit of oregano over the meat for a baked-in flavor. Many cooks create a "rub," a mixture of spices blended and rubbed into meat before it cooks. Experiment with your own blends to create a signature dish.

    Soups

    • Soups are a wonderful dish with the added touch of oregano. You do not have to make your soup from scratch. You can take a canned pre-made soup and add your favorite spices while it simmers on the stove. Oregano is a particularly good match with bean soups, such as minestrone.
