Japanese art festivals occur throughout the world.

Major metropolitan areas in Japan and throughout the world honor the Land of the Rising Sun culture by hosting art festivals showcasing Japanese artwork. While these festivals feature works by Japanese artists, they also display pieces by international artists. Some Japanese art festivals use the tranquility of rural settings as a backdrop for their events.

  1. Japanese Art Festival

    • London, England, hosts its annual Japanese Art Festival during the first weekend of July. Conway Hall in Red Lion Square is the primary center for the festival. The festival features Japanese-influenced music and dance concerts on both days of the event. Festival participants also have access to yoga, manga drawing and calligraphy workshops. Conway Hall also features an exhibition with vendors selling Japanese toys, books and souvenir items. Children under 10 years old may enter the festival for free.

    Japan Media Arts Festival

    • The Japan Media Arts Festival takes place in Tokyo's National Art Center. It is a 12-day event starting in late February and running until early March. The Japan Agency of Cultural Affairs sponsors the festival. It features media arts works in four divisions -- art, entertainment, manga and animation. Each division awards a grand prize, special achievement awards or both. The festival features works created by both Japanese and international artists.

    Japan Film Festival

    • Located in southern California, the Japan Film Festival allows Japanese filmmakers to showcase their works. This annual festival is a two-weekend event in April. Films premiere at four theaters throughout the greater Los Angeles and Orange County areas. At this festival, the filmmakers may speak before or after the film's screening. Film spectators also have opportunities to meet the filmmakers and the actors in the films.

    Echigo-Tsumari Outdoor Art Festival

    • The largest outdoor festival in the world, according to London's Guardian newspaper, is Japan's Echigo-Tsumari Outdoor Art Festival. The festival takes place in Japan's Niigata Prefecture, a rural region in the northwestern part of the country. Over 350 artworks from international artisans are on display at Echigo-Tsumari. A paved road is available for festival visitors to drive past the exhibits. This summer-long event occurs every three years.

    Setouchi International Art Festival

    • The Setouchi region of Japan hosts the annual Setouchi International Art Festival. This festival is a four-month-long event lasting from July through October. The festival is named after Japan's Setouchi region, which is the collection of islands and land near the Seto Sea; some cities with art exhibits for the festival are Naoshima, Inujima and Shodoshima. The Setouchi International Art Festival features contemporary artwork at museums throughout the islands, such as Chichu Art Museum and Benesse Museum.
