Pre-Cut Lumber Sizes

Whether you are building a home or performing some remodeling around the house, using pre-cut lumber can save time and money. Without the need for cutting to size at the work site, builders and do-it-yourselfers can avoid the additional time required to prepare lumber for a project. Recognizing some of the more common pre-cut sizes in advance can affect how you proceed with a project. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Treated Lumber

    • For damp climates and projects that involve lumber that will be consistently exposed to the elements, pre-cut treated lumber is often ideal. These come in a variety of pre-cut sizes such as 2-inches thick by 4-feet wide, 2-by-6, 2-by-8 up to 2-by-12. They are also available in 4-by-4, 4-by-6 and 6-by-6. Lengths can vary from 8 up to 20 feet.

    Plywood

    • One of the more popular pre-cut wood choices found at many hardware stores and lumber yards is plywood. Standard plywood is usually sold in pre-cut sizes measuring 4 feet by 8 feet. Widths will vary from as thin as one-eighth of an inch, to as thick as three-quarters of an inch. Pre-cut plywood is sometimes available in 2-feet by 2-feet, 2-by-4 and 2-by-6 sizes as well.

    Framing

    • Pre-cut lumber used for framing comes in a number of sizes. Standard framing lumber lengths can be found in 6-, 8-, 10-, 12- and 16-feet lengths. Worth noting for projects requiring extremely accurate measurements is wood tends to be smaller than the advertised dimensions. As wood dries and is subsequently smoothed out by planing, the actual dimensions will be approximately one-half inch smaller. So, a 2-by-4's actual dimensions are more likely to be 1.5 by 3.5 inches.

    Other Uses

    • Lumber used for projects such as building shelves, cabinetry, floors and fences will each of their own, unique standard pre-cut sizes. While there are a number of choices for standard lumber dimensions, pre-cut can also refer to the lumber yard cutting it to your specifications prior to your picking it up for use. This type of pre-cut timber is a middle ground between sizing all the lumber by yourself on the job site, and having to conform to pre-determined dimensions from the supplier regardless of your building project.
