Simple Home Remedy to Get Rid of Bees

Bees are highly adaptable insects found in almost every part of the world. While bees are only really active for about two months of the year, they can be nuisances when they make their home too close to yours. If bees keep swarming their way into your summer fun, try several natural home remedies to repel or kill them.

Cleaning Products

  • You may already have several cleaning products in your home that will kill intrusive bees. Spray individual bees with Formula 409 for an instant kill. Use water-soluble hairspray to immobilize bees before squishing them. To exterminate full nests, mix 1/3 cup of mild dish soap in a 1-gallon bucket of water. Dump the water into the nests.

Essential Oils

  • Bees are particularly sensitive to essential oils. Use pure almond oil to plug bee holes or spray it into their nests. The smell repels them naturally. You could also mix 2 cups of vodka, 1 tbsp. each of citronella and eucalyptus oils and 1 tsp. each of orange, rosemary, lemon and geranium oils. Shake up the mixture in a spray bottle and spray it into bees' favorite nesting places or into the air around the porch. This concoction is a fragrance bomb. Bees will steer clear of the strong smells.

Vacuum Cleaners

  • Vacuum cleaners are powerful bee destroying tools. Use an industrial sized vacuum to disturb a ground-based colony. Feed the vacuum tube carefully into the nest hole and let the vacuum do its work. Choose the early morning or late evening to vacuum bees up as they are more sluggish during these times. You can also use a regular house vacuum cleaner to kill any bees that find their way into the home.

Smoke

  • Burn some wood or paper underneath a hanging beehive. Make sure the smoke from the fire passes through the beehive. The smoke will send bees far away from the hive without killing them. Once you are sure the bees are gone, carefully remove and discard the nest. This method is best done late at night when bees are slow and cannot see.
