Rules for Posting on Craigslist

Save

Craigslist is a community directory website founded in 1995 by Craig Newman as a way of sharing local events in San Francisco, California. It has grown to be one of the top visited websites in English and regularly connects millions of buyers and sellers or workers and jobs. Before posting your ad on Craigslist there are a few important rules you need to know.

Prohibited Items

  • Craigslist maintains list of prohibited items that can't be advertised for sale on their website. These items include anything that is illegal to sell in any other venue such as child pornography, tobacco or alcohol and unregistered firearms, says Craigslist. Any items that are counterfeit or stolen are also prohibited. Recalled items, even if the recall is for a minor problem, can't be listed either. Some things that are legal in parts of the country like fireworks can't be listed on any Craigslist boards.

Services

  • Plumbers, architects and mural painters are all encouraged to list their services on their local Craigslist under the appropriate category. However, some services shouldn't be listed. Limited adult services can be advertised but offering prostitution or other sexual acts is not allowed according to Craigslist. Linking to your website is strictly prohibited as well unless you are using it to share more information about a service. Advertising is not allowed for retail stores or other brick and mortar establishments if they don't offer specific services.

Jobs and Housing

  • If you post a job offer or rental property on Craigslist you must follow the Federal housing laws regarding discrimination warns Craigslist. Renters or job applicants can't be denied based on their age, gender, country of origin, existing disability, religion or skin color. Text like "no children allowed" can't be used in property rental ads because it is considered discriminatory against families. If you post a public ad on Craigslist you must consider all of the applicants fairly.

Locality

  • Craigslist has over 700 different area-specific pages that focuses on major cities or towns around the world. Each post you ad must be related and occuring or available in the area indicated at the top of the page according to Craigslist. You shouldn't post your ad in multiple cities even if you are advertising an online service or something similar that is available around the world. Other websites allow global listings but Craigslist is focused on local results only.
