Using an ATM (automated teller machine) makes getting cash from your checking or savings account quick and easy, but it comes with its own risks and dangers under certain circumstances. To do your banking through ATMs without problems, always practice the appropriate safety precautions in order to protect yourself against fraud or theft.

  1. Walk-Up ATM Safety

    • If you plan on using a walk-up ATM machine, it is advised that you do so in the daytime. If you are using an ATM machine at night, try to find one inside of a business or in a busy shopping center that is well-lit and has on-site security officers. Bring a friend with you to keep watch of your surroundings when using an ATM machine after hours. If a robber accosts you and demands money, give it to him, escape as quickly as possible and report it to the police immediately.

    Drive-Thru ATM Safety

    • Drive-thru ATMs are available at most bank branches but can still be unsafe without the proper precautions. When using a drive-thru ATM, keep your engine running, your doors locked and your headlights on. Only roll down the window you need to use the ATM and keep the rest rolled up. Leave enough space between you and any cars in front of you in case you need to drive away quickly.

    Preventing Fraud

    • ATM fraud is not uncommon, but it can be prevented if you are careful and keep your pin number private. Never give out your pin number to anyone else or request someone else to withdraw money for you. When using an ATM, don't allow people to stand too close or look over your shoulder. Hold your hand up to cover the keypad when entering your pin. Never write down your pin anywhere. Before using an ATM machine, look at it closely and avoid it if there are any unusual devices or it looks odd to you in any way.

    Additional Precautions

    • If you are planning to use an ATM machine for deposits, withdrawals or other services, prepare your envelopes and forms before exiting your vehicle. When you are withdrawing money from an ATM machine, do not count your cash until you are safely in your locked vehicle. Save your ATM receipts and compare them to your bank statements for accuracy. Avoid placing your ATM card in your wallet where the magnetic strip will rub against another credit card's magnetic strip; this can cause both strips to stop working and will require you to replace your cards.
