Reset buttons typically help restore functionality to electronics or appliances in the event of a minor fault. General Electric (GE) refrigerators do not have a dedicated reset button, but you can, however, reset your refrigerator in the event of a technical problem. The process should be the first step you take if there is ever a problem with the the motor, controls, thermostat or any other part of the refrigerator. Resetting your GE appliance is uncomplicated and takes about a minute.
The Reset Process
Move the refrigerator forward so you can access the power cord and see the appliance's outlet. Unplug the refrigerator, and wait for roughly 30 seconds while the internal computer resets itself; then plug the power cord back in. The refrigerator starts back up as normal.
Reasons for Resetting the Refrigerator
You have several reasons why you might need to reset your refrigerator, including problems with the motor, an unresponsive control panel and too warm or too cold temperatures inside the appliance. GE technicians can put refrigerators in diagnostic mode during repairs; disconnecting the power supply cancels the diagnostic mode if it has been accidentally left on.
Advantages of Resetting the Refrigerator
Authorized service technicians can often be expensive, especially if your appliance is uninsured or outside of its warranty period. Many people choose to save money by attempting to resolve minor problems at home and the reset process is among the first steps recommended by GE during troubleshooting.
When to Reset the Refrigerator
Complete the reset process detailed above at the first sign of trouble with your appliance. You might notice the motor has stopped running or find the internal temperature has climbed unusually high when a fault has occurred. In many cases, resetting your refrigerator clears minor technical problems.
