Teachers in Washington County, Pennsylvania, earn salaries that are toward the low end of average salaries paid to all classroom teachers in Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Department of Education says in an annual report, "2009-10 Professional Staff Collection." The report, prepared by the Division of Data Quality, was released in October 2010. It is available online as an Excel spreadsheet.

County Averages

Results show that Bucks County teachers had the highest average salary in the state, at $78,136. Huntington County had the lowest average salary at $45,126. Washington County teachers earned an average of $51,786 annually when all school districts in the county are considered. The report only uses averages for all the school districts in a county. It does not break teachers' salaries down by education and experience, or by the subjects and grades a teacher specializes in. The Philadelphia School District had the most teachers, 13,182, of any district in the state. It paid its classroom teachers an average of $61,123 annually for that school year.

County’s Highest Paid Teachers

The highest paid teachers in Washington County work for the Peters Township School District, the report notes. The district had 259 teachers in the 2009-10 school year, and paid each an average salary of $51,494 annually. Located in McMurray, Pennsylvania, the school district boasts of the many awards and honors it has won on a statewide and national basis. The honors included its Bower Hill Elementary School being named one of 10 top schools nationwide by the Character Education Partnership.

County’s Lowest Paid Teachers

The Fort Cherry School District was at the bottom of the salary totem pole in Washington County in 2009-10, paying its 90 teachers an average of $45,044 annually. Located in McDonald, Pennsylvania, the school district's budget for the 2009-10 school year indicated the district planned to spend just over $6 million for instructional salaries. The school district's strategic plan for 2007 to 2013 notes that enrollment in the district has declined in recent years.
