Ideas for Hiding Poles When Remodeling a Basement

Save

Finishing off or remodeling a basement offers homeowners additional living space. When planning the space, unmovable support poles need to be taken into consideration. One option is to leave them as-is and exposed for an industrial feel in the room. Other interior design schemes call for them to dressed up or hidden completely from view.

Wall Them In

  • If the poles are near the sides of the area, they can be hidden behind additional framing and walls. The problem with this option is that you lose some square footage of space around the posts. Another way to go about it is to have custom built-ins installed around the poles. For example, hide basement poles behind the support for bookshelves or an entertainment center.

Build False Columns

  • Build false columns around support poles. This option works especially well for posts that are in the middle of the room. These columns can framed to mimic all types of designs, such as matching ones that are existing in the upper levels of your home or create a whole new decorating scheme. Adding trimmings and edgings can take a sleek design into an ornate one.

Paint The Poles

  • To reduce the amount of construction needed, paint basement poles to blend into the rest of your decor. For example, a simple cream color that matches the walls of a traditional design or solid black to flow with a black and white checkerboard floor in a retro theme. Using painter's tape or stencils to create stripes and other designs to coordinate with patterned fabrics throughout the room is another option.

Decorate Them

  • Sometimes the best way to hide something in a design is to make it an integral element in the scheme. For example, in a dance club themed basement remodel wrap colored twinkle lights around the poles that flicker to the beat of music. When going for a more funky lounge feel, mosaic the poles in mirrored tiles or wrap them in feather boas for a whimsical party place.
