As one of the largest restaurant operations in the world, McDonald's has a huge and persistent demand for managers who are responsible for hiring, training, scheduling and supervising crew members. Compensation can vary depending on the type of management position. While, first-year salaries at McDonald's are consistent with management positions at other fast food chains, they are typically lower than those of food service managers overall, who are paid an average of $25.28 an hour, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The top manager at a McDonald's restaurant can expect a base pay of about $35,000 in the first year of employment. There are also monthly bonus opportunities, paid vacation, medical and dental plans and the opportunity to participate in a 401(k) plan. The position calls for "an energetic and driven individual" with management experience. He is responsible for supervising assistant managers and shift managers, as well as all crew members.
An assistant manager serves as second in command and handles the responsibilities of the manager in his absence. The position usually pays about $11 an hour in the first year and includes the benefits available to a manager. Those in this position are often promoted to manager.
Shift or Swing Manager
During the first year, a shift manager or swing manager can expect to be paid about the same as a crew member, between $8.50 and $10 an hour. The duties, however, involve managing staff and learning the procedures that may lead to an assistant manager or manager position. Employees participating in the McDonald's management training program can earn 46 college credits toward a two-year or four-year degree.
