A Home Remedy to Remove Soap Scum From Glass Shower Doors

Save

When glass shower doors are not regularly cleaned and wiped down after a shower, soap scum forms. Soap scum is made up of hard water combined with mineral deposits, body oils, sloughed-off skin, soap talc and bacteria. The stubborn film coats shower doors and is difficult to remove. While prevention is the key, a number of safe homemade remedies can remove soap scum from glass shower doors.

Lemon Oil

  • Lemon oil is acidic and will break up soap scum, making it easy to wipe off. Lemon oil cuts through scum so easily you only need to use a clean cotton cloth. Rub on the oil and just wipe. Lemon oil will also help keep soap scum from building up on the doors.

White Vinegar

  • White vinegar, an all-purpose household cleaner, will also remove soap scum from glass shower doors. Thoroughly soak a steel wood pad in the vinegar, and use the pad to scrub the door. You can also use white vinegar as a spray. Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of water, and pour into a spray bottle. Shake well before using, spray the solution on the glass doors, let it sit for a minute or two and wipe with a soft cloth.

Baking Soda

  • Inexpensive and environmentally friendly, baking soda is also good at cleaning soap scum, although you may have to scrub a bit. Soak a steel wool cleaning pad in hot water. Once saturated, liberally cover with baking soda. When scrubbing the glass shower door, keep the cleaning pad damp and covered with baking soda for best results.

Borax

  • Borax is both a scouring powder and cleaning agent. Apply the powder with a wet sponge, and scrub off the soap scum. After cleaning, rinse down the glass doors with hot water.

Products for Other Uses

  • Products for other uses will also remove soap scum. To use a liquid laundry stain remover, use a sponge or steel wood pad, pour on the stain remover and rub on the door. Soap scum should easily come off. Rinse with hot water. Cleaning erasers can also be used. Cleaner erasers are sponges with a fine texture and a cleaning solution already in them. Soak the eraser in warm water. After wringing out the excess water, scrub the shower door. Rinse with warm water as you clean.

Fabric-softening Sheet

  • Fabric-softening sheets, the sheets you use in the clothes dryer, are another product designed for a different purpose but can clean glass shower doors as well. The sheets have chemicals that will soften water deposits. Loosen the crusty deposits by scrubbing the shower door with a scrub brush. You can then use the fabric-softening sheets to clean and wipe off the door.

Finishing

  • Always thoroughly rinse the shower door after a good scrubbing. Keep the area well-ventilated by leaving bathroom doors and windows open to increase light, air circulation and reduce moisture levels. Wear gloves as you work, and wash your hands after you have finished.
