Hazards of Flip-Flop Shoes

Cheaply made flip flops can cause injuries and blisters.

Flip flops may be your favorite summer shoes, but they are your podiatrist's worst nightmare. One Internet search for "flip flop hazards" will drudge up countless stories of unfortunate accidents and long-term foot problems caused by the popular beach shoes, also called thongs. While some types of flip flops are worse than others, doctors generally recommend that all of them be worn in moderation.

  1. Breaks, Sprains, Twists

    • Cheaply made or poorly structured flip flops provide no arch or ankle support, which often leads to embarrassing falls or even broken ankles. The American Podiatric Medical Association recommends that, to prevent such mishaps, consumers make sure that the flip flop cannot be bent in half. It should only bend at the ball of the foot and should provide comfortable, structured arch support. Flip flops should also provide an adequate cushion for your foot with each step. You can also minimize the risk of tripping by ensuring that your toes do not extend farther than the front of the shoe, and discard shoes with any signs of damage, including cracking or fraying.

    Blisters

    • Flip flops that are made of inexpensive rubber often rub against your skin and can cause painful blisters. Flip flops made of a soft leather or higher quality plastic may prevent this problem. Strategically placed adhesive bandages and limited wear time are also valuable blister prevention tactics.

    Flip Flop Unfriendly Activities

    • Walking short distances to the beach or pool are occasions that generally call for flip flops, but some activities definitely do not. A few examples of such activities include long-distance walks, gardening or other yard work, sports or any other activities that require a lot of movement. Choose shoes appropriate to your activity, keeping in mind that flip flops should never be worn for extensive periods of time.

    Find a Better Flip Flop

    • The APMA has compiled a list of dozens of flip flops that are considered better for your feet. Included on the list are specific kinds of flip flops made by a handful of different brands. Recommended flip flops come in a variety of styles, and range in price. More expensive flip flops may be hard to justify at first, but if they provide better support, they can prevent costly injuries. Well-built flip flops tend to last for many years, as well.
