Shoes That Become Sandals

Shoes That Become Sandals thumbnail
Shoes that provide support but can still allow for air flow can be used as sandals.

Sandals leave parts of the feet exposed to the air, which give the feet more room to breath in warmer temperatures. They are also useful when your feet may get wet from rain or water sports. Not all sandals give the same support as shoes for movement like walking, however. But there are some shoes that allow for movement and provide arch support, and they can still be made into sandals to provide airy comfort for your feet. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Straps

    • Adjustable straps are one of the most popular ways to make shoes into sandals. Chaco brand shoes are known for this style, since they provide foot, toe and heel shoe support, but the toe straps can be adjusted or removed to allow for more foot movement. These versatile strap shoes can be worn on light hikes, and they can also be worn as sandals in the water.

    Fasteners

    • Hook-and-loop fasteners, such as those that are well-known to be on the brand of Teva shoes, provide heel and foot support, but they do not have sandal toe straps, which make it possible to wear wool or liner socks with the shoes. Once you remove the socks, the shoes can be tightened and worn in the water or the beach.

    Zippers

    • More recent designs of removable shoe tops can turn shoes into sandals by unzipping a zipper that goes around the perimeter of the shoe sole. The Nat-2 shoes is an example of this design, and it allows you to unzip the sole of your shoes to reveal a pair of sandals.

    Buckles

    • Buckles have been classically used by the shoe brand Birkenstock to make sturdy shoes that can be worn as sandals or shoes. Birkenstocks have adjustable buckles so that you can wear hiking socks with them, or you can remove your socks and tighten the buckles to wear the shoes as sandals.
