Typepad Vs. Moveable Type
Typepad and Moveable Type are not as different as you might believe, as they are, in fact, owned by the same company. They do have their differences however and depending on how you plan on using the platform one may be more appropriate than the other.
-
Self-Hosting
-
If you are hosting your blog on your own server then you might want to consider Moveable Type. Moveable Type is a downloadable software platform. You must have coding knowledge, however, to fully customize your blog. In particular, customization relies heavily on HTML, XHTML, and CSS coding. It would also be a good idea to have some experience with FTP so that you know how to upload files to your blog.
Hosting
-
If you are looking for an external host for your blog, then Typepad is more appropriate than Movable Type. Typepad simply involves signing up for an account and your blog is ready. Typepad also allows customization, but due to the hosting nature, this customization is somewhat more limited than when using Movable Type. This option does not require extensive coding knowledge to customize.
-
Conflict
-
The have been some criticisms of Six Apart, the developer of both Typepad and Movable Type. This is because the two services are very similar resulting in a slight conflict of interest. In particular, some users of the Movable Type service believe that Typepad users are given more priority due to the recurring monthly fee charged to the latter. This resulted in many users believing that the company should simply sell Typepad and focus on improving the main platform.
Other Services
-
Moveable Type and Typepad are very similar to other services. Typepad, being a hosted blog platform, is somewhat similar to services such as blogger which provides the same service for free, though Typepad is considered a more professional alternative. Typepad as a hosted blog service is very similar to Wordpress.com's free blog hosting in that Typepad is based on the company's main platform, Movable Type. Wordpress.com is based on the platform Wordpress.org.
