Some techniques can help you spray paint plastic bowls.

If you're looking for a way to turn a basic plastic bowl into a creative centerpiece, consider using a spray paint technique. There are a number of tips you can use to ensure the spray paint sticks to the plastic, and you can use them to create a unique craft bowl for your home.

  1. Surface Prep

    • Take care to prepare the plastic bowl for the spray paint, so the paint will adhere smoothly to the bowl. First, sand the bowl with a fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface. Then, wash the bowl with soap and water to remove any debris. Make sure to thoroughly dry the bowl after washing.

    Primer

    • If you're concerned the spray paint won't stick smoothly to the plastic bowl, consider using a primer specially made for plastic. Spray primer designed for plastic pieces can be applied to the bowl in a thin, even coat before using your desired spray paint. Make sure to let the primer fully dry before moving on to the spray paint.

    Painting

    • When it's time to apply the spray paint to the plastic bowl, make sure to shake the can well before spraying. Also, hold the can at least 5 inches from the bowl to make sure you get a thin, even coat on the bowl. Apply the paint in medium-length strokes so the color comes out uniform along the bowl.

    Clear Coat

    • Applying a clear coat of spray lacquer will ensure the paint doesn't chip off of the plastic bowl. Apply the clear spray over the dried spray paint, in a thin, even layer. Don't make the clear spray too thick, or it might get gooey and dry in drips. Let the bowl dry fully before using.

    Taping

    • You can use painter's tape to make a unique design on the bowl. Cut pieces of painter's tape into different shapes, like circles or squares, and apply them around the bowl. Or, just apply strips of the tape to the bowl to make stripes. You can then spray the bowl with the paint and peel off the tape pieces, revealing a design.

    Metallic Paint

    • Spray paint comes in all kinds of shades and colors. and metallic spray paint allows you to create pieces in hues like gold, silver and copper. Use a metallic spray paint on a plastic bowl to make the piece look like it's actually made of metal. Or, use bronze to give the bowl a rustic, Tuscan look.
