Finding out that your passport application has been denied can be excruciating. Knowing the common reasons why passports are denied can help you avoid hiccups in the application process.

Missing Documents

Triple-check that all of the required documents are submitted along with your passport application. The most common reason for a passport being denied is missing documents.

Illegible Photocopies

When photocopying the required documents, make sure they are legible and look as close to the original copy as possible. If the documents come out too dark, or if even the smallest piece of the copy is distorted, it can result in a denial of your application.

Outstanding Warrants

The passport application process requires a background check that will verify identity and criminal history. If an outstanding criminal arrest warrant is found, your application will be denied.

Felonies

Some felonies prevent international travel. If an applicable felony is found on your record in the background check process, your application for a passport will be denied.

Back Child Support

If you owe back child support or are behind on your child support payments by more than $2,500, your application will be denied. Bring your child support case status current, and you will be eligible to receive a passport.

Back Taxes

You can also be denied a passport if you are known to be in arrears on your federal income taxes. Make sure your tax filings are correct and up-to-date before you apply for a passport.
