Do You Have to Change Your Name on Your DL and SSN, if You Get Married ?
Each state can determine its own requirements as to if and when your name must be changed on your driver's license. Some states require your name be changed on your social security card before changing it on your driver's license. You will need to check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles for specific rules and laws. Regardless of your state's DVM laws about name changes, it is important that your cards match your signature for identity purposes.

Keeping Your Maiden Name

It is perfectly legal to keep your maiden name, or to not change your name, after you are married. In this case, you need not change the name on your social security card or driver's license. After marriage, you will continue using your name as you did before.
Taking your Spouse's Name

It is very common for a bride to take the last name of her new husband. However, some husband's take their bride's last name after marriage. You can take on the last name of your spouse without filing papers with the court. Your marriage certificate will be enough proof. In this case, you will need to change the name on your driver's license and social security card. Many people, such as notaries, use your driver's license or social security card as proof of identity. Your signature will need to match the name on these documents.

Combining Your Names

Some people prefer to keep both names after marriage. They may connect the two name using a hyphen. This is more commonly seen with brides than grooms. However, either can use the hyphenated name. Changing you name on your driver's license and social security card may not be as big of deal with a hyphenated name; but it is still advised.
Name Change Time Period

You will need to check with your state's DMV office to determine specific laws. Some states -- such as New York and South Carolina -- require that you notify the DMV within 10 days of changing your name or address, while other states -- like Idaho -- require a change within 30 days. Nevada requires that your name be changed on your social security card first, then on your driver's license.
