What Is iReader for Google?

Google's free Chrome Web browser uses optional add-on extensions to improve your Internet browsing experience. When you use Chrome to view articles on a website, for example, you can strip out advertisements and other page elements from the article using the iReader extension.

  1. Chrome

    • Google's products and services include a search engine, maps and document creation applications; the company also provides a free Web browser named Chrome. Chrome combines the search bar and address bar into a single box; it also includes an auto-update feature to ensure that you always have the latest version of the browser on your computer. Chrome also supports add-on extensions like iReader; these extension add extra functionalities to the browser.

    Chrome Browser Extensions

    • Visit the Google Chrome Web Store to find and download extensions to use with the browser. For example, you can add an extension that displays the local weather at the top of the browser, so you don't have to visit a special Web page just to see what the current temperature is. The iReader Chrome extension enables you to view articles and stories on websites without having to look at advertisements and layout features that you might find distracting or annoying.

    Installing iReader

    • Navigate to the Google Chrome Web Store page located at Chrome.Google.com/Webstore. Type "iReader" into the "Search the Store" search box, then press the "Enter" key on the computer's keyboard. Click "Install" to add the iReader extension to Chrome on your computer.

    Using iReader

    • After you install the iReader extension, use Chrome to visit a website that contains an article or story. The "iReader" icon -- which looks like an "R" -- appears in the address bar, indicating that the webpage contains an article that you can read with the iReader extension. Click the iReader icon. The story's text and any available pictures appear; no ads or other extraneous layout elements appear with the story. Scroll through the text if there are multiple pages. Move the pointer to the bottom of the window to make the iReader controls appear, then click the "X" icon to stop viewing the story with iReader and return to viewing the website normally.
