What Is Facebook, How Does It Work and How Much Does It Cost?

Facebook has given millions of people a new way to stay connected. It is many things at once -- a messaging system, an online photo-sharing site, a discussion forum, a chat application, a friend finder, an advertising platform and more. You need a valid email address to open a Facebook account.

  1. Description

    • Facebook is a social networking website that allows you to connect with people you know via the Internet. Use the site to search for old friends and lost relatives, share stories and photos, plan gatherings, promote your business and keep in touch with loved ones from afar. In short, Facebook helps you manage and stay on top of your social life.

    How It Works

    • Every user on Facebook must have a registered account. Through your account, you create a personal profile that shows your name, photo and other details. Search Facebook for people you know or let it suggest individuals to you based on your account information. When you find someone who you may know, send a friend request to that person. If that person accepts your request, you will become confirmed friends on the site and be able to share your activities with each other.

    Interface

    • Facebook has a consistent blue and white user interface. When you log in, the News Feed displays your friends' latest activities, photos and comments in the middle column of the page. Above are "share" tabs for posting status updates, pictures, videos and links. A navigation bar on the left column lists your message inbox, friends, applications and games. View your or one of your friend's profile by clicking the person's name. The menu on the top right of the page takes you to various account and privacy settings and the Help Center.

    Cost

    • It does not cost anything to use Facebook. Nearly all of its features are free. You can buy Facebook credits for use in games or applications, but it is not required. However if you use Facebook from your mobile phone, your mobile carrier may charge you for Internet and/or text messaging use. And if you are an advertiser and you want to use Facebook's advertising program, Facebook Ads, you must pay to do so.
