Medi spas, short for medical spas, differ from regular spas in that medical spas offer treatments using medical grade devices like lasers. Medical spas operate under the supervision of a medical doctor, who oversees the spa while technicians and aestheticians administer the treatments. Medical aestheticians have training in the use of medical equipment and knowledge of how to treat skin conditions including scars or minor burns. Requirements vary by state but most require some type of licensing to practice as an aesthetician.

  1. Consultation

    • When a patient or client schedules an appointment at a medi spa, an aesthetician meets with the client to determine concerns like wrinkles, age spots or excessive hair growth. The aesthetician completes an intake on the client, obtaining information including medical history, age, medication use and any former treatments the client has had done. Using this information, the aesthetician recommends treatments to the client.

    Treatments

    • Aestheticians administer treatments to clients such as medical facials, which utilize stronger ingredients than regular facials. They also use lasers for many issues such as hair removal, skin rejuvenation, collagen stimulation and cellulite treatment. Medical aestheticians undergo training to use the devices and chemicals to complete these treatments.

    Training

    • In addition to the training that many states require to obtain an aesthetician license, many states require that medical aestheticians undergo routine training as a condition of holding a license. The continuing education requirements vary by state but the goal is to keep aestheticians up-to-date on advances in medical technology and practice. Continuing education also keeps the knowledge and skills that aestheticians should have fresh.

    Cleanliness

    • Cleanliness is important when conducting treatments at a medi spa. Medical aestheticians must keep their workspaces clean. This includes wiping down all areas with antibacterial solutions and doing laundry to get clean towels. Equipment that touches a client's body must be cleaned after every use. Cleanliness standards are important in licensing for a spa, and aestheticians are expected to uphold the standards.
