Bonding with others can take some time, and that first conversation can be intimidating.

When you meet someone new, you have to be careful not to offend him in the first few minutes of your conversation. A topic such as politics or religion could be controversial and risky. Lighter topics of conversation can help you learn about the person and find out if you have common bonds based on interests or background.

  1. Sports Teams

    • Take notice of what someone is wearing when you meet him. If he is wearing a t-shirt or hat with a logo of a sports team, that presents a topic to discuss. Ask him what he thinks of the team and its chances to win the championship, or improve over last year. This will open up a conversation and you can react to the information that he provides and go on to talk more about the team, its players and maybe some details about games.

    Movies

    • If there is a popular movie that has recently been released into the movie theaters, ask her if she has seen the movie. Even if she hasn't seen it, she might provde her feelings about the subject of the movie or the actors in the movie. This will provide an opportunity to discuss movies in general.

    Seasonal Activities

    • Discuss some of the activities that are popular during the season. This can include subjects ranging from the weather to seasonal entertainment. If it's summer, you can ask him if he is planning a summer vacation. In winter, an upcoming snowstorm or other weather event that is in the news can provide an icebreaker to start a conversation.

    Food

    • If you meet someone in a restaurant or grocery store, food is a natural subject to discuss. Ask her what her favorite food is at that restaurant, or what one of her favorite types of foods are to prepare. This can help give you an idea of the types of food she enjoys and you can share some of your favorites or ideas for preparing foods that you have read about or seen on television. You might even find a new dish to try.
