Blackberry Storm Vs. Xperia X1

Released in 2008, the BlackBerry Storm 9530 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 have basic features in common, such as multiple-network connectivity and memory expansion capability. In spite of their similarities, there are several differences that you will want to consider before choosing one phone over the other.

  1. Physical Features

    • Compact and lightweight, the BlackBerry Storm 9530 and Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 are identically 4.4 inches long, but are different in their other measurements. The Storm measures 2.5 inches wide and 0.5 inches deep, while the Xperia X1 measures 2.1 inches wide and 0.7 inches deep. At 5.5 oz., the Storm is somewhat heavier than the Xperia X1, which weighs 5.1 oz. Both phones feature a thin-film transistor touch screen, which displays more than 65,000 colors at different resolutions and on different-sized screens. The Storm's 3.3-inch screen displays at 360 by 480 pixels of resolution, while the Xperia X1's 3-inch screen displays at 480 by 800 pixels. The Xperia X1's keyboard is on the phone's side-sliding component, while the Storm's touch-sensitive keyboard appears on-screen.

    Battery Lives

    • The BlackBerry Storm 9530 is powered by a standard lithium-ion battery, which provides up to 5.5 hours of talk time and up to 360 hours, or 15 days, of standby time. A standard lithium-polymer battery gives the Sony Ericsson Xperia X! up to 10 hours of talk time and up to 500 hours, or 20.8 days, of standby time. Similar models on the market in 2011 get an average of seven hours of talk time and 446 hours, or 18.6 days, of standby time.

    Internal Components

    • The BlackBerry Storm 9530 is built on the BlackBerry operating system and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is built on the Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system, but both use a 528 MHz ARM 11 processor. While the Xperia X1 uses a Wireless Access Protocol 2.0/HTML browser to access the Internet, the Storm uses a basic HTML browser. Both devices feature an assisted-GPS application, which uses a combination of cellular tower and satellite signals to give the phones navigational capability.

    Cameras

    • Both the BlackBerry Storm 9530 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 feature a 3.2-megapixel camera that takes pictures at up to 2,048 by 1,536 pixels of resolution and is capable of recording video. While the Xperia X1 has a secondary, rear-facing camera that gives the phone video conferencing capability, the Storm does not. Only the Storm comes with geotagging capability, a process that embeds map and GPS coordinates into each image. Geotagging is especially helpful if you're unsure of your location or want to return to the exact site of a previously-taken picture.
