Similarities Between an Ecologist & an Environmentalist

An ecologist can be an environmentalist but an environmentalist is not necessarily an ecologist.

The words "ecologist" and "environmentalist" are often used interchangeably. Although both groups tend to share similar ideals and philosophies on the natural world, by definition they are quite different. An ecologist is a scientist who studies ecology while an environmentalist may have no scientific expertise but has a concern for the health of the environment.

  1. Ecologist

    • Ecology is a branch of the broad science of biology -- the study of living organisms like plants, animals and bacteria. The more specific ecology, however, is the study of the interactions of those organisms within their environment. Ecologists can study the distribution of plants and animals and the diversity of species within an ecosystem. These scientists can also survey abundances of species or study the effects of environmental changes on species distribution. The typical ecologist position usually requires a master's degree in biology along with analytical training and skills to interpret statistical data. Ecologists can work for academic institutions, government organizations, private industry, consulting firms or other non-government organizations.

    Environmentalist

    • An environmentalist is someone with a concern for the state of the environment. Environmentalists are well informed of environmental issues like pollution, habitat destruction and climate change. They often participate in political activities to advocate for a better environment. They may work for non-profit organizations that campaign against environmental offenses. The term "environmentalist" should not be confused with an environmental scientist who has a post-secondary scientific education.

    Similarities

    • An ecologist can also be an environmentalist but an environmentalist is not necessarily an ecologist. Generally, environmentalists and ecologists share a concern for the state of the environment. They understand natural processes and are aware of the impact of human activities on those processes. Environmentalists and ecologists can provide information to governments and industries regarding unsustainable practices. They often challenge industries to improve or stop practices that are detrimental to organisms and ecosystems.

    Differences

    • The major difference between an ecologist and an environmentalist is a formal education in biological science. An ecologist usually has a graduate degree in the study of ecology. An environmentalist may or may not have a post-secondary education. Environmentalism is more of a life philosophy than it is a scientific position. Regardless of definition, both environmentalists and ecologists work to improve the health of the environment and to inform others on the impact of human actions on natural systems.
