What Is a Facebook Message?
Facebook is a social networking site that allows users to create a profile page and connect with other users by sending Friend Requests and adding people to a Friends List that keeps track of status updates and other information that people the user may know are doing on Facebook. It is a great way to stay in touch with friends and colleagues in the real world, no matter how far away from you they are.

Facebook Messages

A Facebook message is a written communication that is sent from another Facebook user to you. You can receive a message from anyone using Facebook and choose whether or not to reply to the message. You can also receive instant message from anyone on your Friends List by using the Chat tool.
Reading a Facebook Message

When you have received a Facebook message, an red indication icon will appear over the Messages icon on the top left portion of the Facebook screen. Clicking on the Messages icon will show the profile picture of the person who sent you the message along with their name and a portion of the message they sent. Clicking on this will take you to the full message.

Creating a Facebook Message

To reply to the message, simply click inside the text box just beneath the message that was sent to you. Type your reply, and then click the "Enter" button on your keyboard. The message will be sent to the user and arrive in their own Messages inbox. You can also create your own Facebook message by clicking the Message icon, and then "Send a New Message." A window will appear where you can type the name of the person you wish to send the message to and the message itself. When you are ready to send the message, click the "Send" button.
Using Facebook Chat

On the bottom right corner of the window, there is a tab that reads "Chat" with a number in parentheses next to it. The number is the number of people who are online and available to chat. Click the tab and the name of the person you want to send an instant message. Type the message and press "Enter" on your keyboard. You and that Friend can then chat instantly as long as you both stay logged into your Facebook accounts.
