You can choose whether to use your HDTV or MacBook screen as your primary display.

The MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air all have high-resolution displays, but with the largest measuring 17 inches, it might well be necessary to connect it to an external display for a larger viewing experience and opportunity to display your work or media to more people at the same time. All the MacBook models are equipped to output video and audio to an HDTV, offering various connections and HD output resolutions.

  1. Connection Formats

    • All MacBook models feature a Mini DisplayPort on the side. Apple makes Mini DisplayPort adapters that will convert the video output to either VGA or DVI. You will need a separate audio adaptor if you wanted sound to output to your HDTV as well. You can also get Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adaptors that output sound as well as picture to an HDTV, but Apple does not manufacture them. Whatever inputs you have on the back of your HDTV, you should be able to find an adaptor.

    Resolution

    • All MacBook models can output video at a maximum resolution of 2,560 by 1,600 pixels. This is more than enough to match the 1,920 by 1,080 resolution of a 1080p full HDTV. While your MacBook is connected to your HDTV, the MacBook's built-in display maintains its full resolution, although this varies depending on the model and size.

    Setup

    • Once you've connected your HDTV to your MacBook, go to the "Display" option in System Preferences, and you can customize your output settings. Here you can choose the appropriate resolution for your TV, choose which screen to use as your primary display, and arrange the positioning of your TV in relation to your MacBook.

    Closed Display Mode

    • If you don't need to use both the HDTV and MacBook's display at the same time, you can run your MacBook with its lid closed. This helps to save on space too. You have to plug your TV into your MacBook before you close the lid, and connect an external mouse and keyboard. Once you close the lid, click a mouse button or press a keyboard key, and your MacBook will display fully on your HDTV.
