The bow tie was originally worn with formal wear and is one of the first knots used for neck wear. Dating back to the 1700s, the bow tie was worn by men, but more modern times have seen the bow tie being worn by children and women. The most common way to wear a bow tie is during formal occasions such as proms, black tie events, parties or weddings. The bow tie is commonly one color and matches the cummerbund. The formal bow tie comes in many different types depending on your ability to tie a bow tie. The freestyle bow tie is the type that goes around your neck under the collar of the shirt and you tie yourself. The ready-tie is the type that goes around your neck under the collar, but is already tied and clips into place at the bow. The clip-on bow tie is the same as any clip-on and does not wrap around the neck, but only clips onto the front of the shirt.
Casual

Modern times finds the bow tie used by men as a casual wear item. More men wear a bow tie with jeans, long-sleeve shirt and blazer. The designs of the bow tie have also progressed from the one color into stripes, dots and other unique designs. You find other men wearing casual black, khaki or other solid color pants with a bow tie as an accessory, but without a blazer or jacket. There are so many different ways men wear bow ties in today's society, including around the neck without being tied, like a scarf.

Many women wear bow ties in modern times than any previous generation. Commonly, women wear the bow tie as a hair accessory similar to a hair clip or other hair accessory. You will find women wearing the bow tie on the side of the head, in the front or even as a ponytail holder. The bow tie is becoming a women's fashion statement all over the world.
Broach

Many women purchase a smaller bow tie to wear as a broach on the blouse or jacket. It is recommended by fashion guides, such as Ladybrille, to coordinate the bow tie with the type of blouse or jacket being worn. Choosing a brightly colored bow tie with a bright shirt color is not recommended. It is best to wear a bright bow tie with a plain shirt or jacket.

More and more hand bag designer's include the bow tie in the design of their purses. Women pickup on this type of fashion and can be found placing bow ties on wicker baskets, luggage or carrying bags. Modern times find the bow tie being worn in many different ways and without limits.
