The skull and crossbones is an easily recognizable pirate symbol.

While modern-day piracy is a serious issue, historical and fictional piracy continues to inspire the public's imagination and win popular acclaim with pirate-themed movies, books and even occasions, such as Talk Like A Pirate Day. Fortunately, for Halloween night or a costume party, there are many different approaches you could use to successfully dress up like a pirate. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Pirate Stereotypes

    • One fun pirate dress-up option is to incorporate as many pirate stereotypes as is feasible into your costume. Wear an eye patch, bandanna, tricorne hat with a feather, 18th century English-style jacket, loose white shirt, loose trousers, sash or cummerbund, fake pistols and fake sword. Have a fake parrot pinned to your shoulder, hook on your hand and wooden peg leg.

    Movie Pirates

    • Some popular pirate movies include "Hook," "The Princess Bride" and "The Pirates of Penzance." However, the most successful pirate movies to date have been the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. Dress like Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp. He has a mustache, goatee and long dreadlocks. He wears a tricorne hat, bandanna, white shirt, dark jacket, dark vest, dark trousers and several rings. He is armed with pistols and a sword. Though Jack Sparrow is the pirate star of these movies, other pirate inspiration can be found in the characters of Captain Barbossa, Elizabeth Swan and William Turner.

    Commercial Pirates

    • There are a few pirates that serve as immediately-recognizable figureheads for commercial companies or brands. Two of the most famous are Cap'n Crunch and Captain Morgan. Cap'n Crunch represents Cap'n Crunch cereal made by The Quaker Oats Company. He wears a blue bicorne hat with a gold C and a blue early 19th century coat with gold-colored details, and has a white beard and mustache. Captain Morgan represents Captain Morgan Rum Company. He wears a red tricorne hat, red 18th century coat, large belt with a pistol tucked into it, blue cloak and blue pants. He has long black hair, a mustache and a goatee, and wears gold hoop earrings.

    Historical Pirates

    • Historical pirates also serve as rich models for pirate costume. Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, was an English pirate known for his pirate exploits in the Caribbean and in the East Coast of what is now the United States. Blackbeard had a full black beard, wore a scarlet-colored cloak and carried six pistols across his chest. Sir Francis Drake was an English pirate known for his pirate exploits against Spanish interests. In portraits, he had a closely cropped beard and mustache, wore a fashionable white neck ruff and carried a sword.
