Salaries of Mayors in Ohio

Home to the Rock and Roll and NFL Hall of Fame, the state of Ohio is known as the "Buckeye State." Some of its largest and most popular cities include Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Dayton. These cities are run by mayors, who as of 2011 were Mark Mallory, Frank Jackson, Michael Coleman and Gary Leitzell respectively. The salaries of each of these mayors differs and may not always be based on city size and budget. Several Ohio mayors have reduced their pay or chosen not to accept pay increases in recent years.

By population, Columbus is the largest city in Ohio followed by Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo and Akron. Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson earns $132,775 as of 2009 and was scheduled for a 2 percent salary increase worth $2,655 in 2009 but chose not to collect his pay raise. Similarly, Columbus mayor Michael Coleman chose not to receive an increase on his salary of $152,000 annually as of 2009. In Cincinnati, the mayor's salary is $121, 291.50 annually as of 2009.

Don Plusquellic, mayor of Akron, Ohio, earns an annual salary of $141,440 as of 2007. In March 2009, Toledo, Ohio's salary review commission opted to cut the mayor's annual salary of $136,000 by 10 percent. By ordinance, the mayor's salary in Dayton, Ohio is $45,440. However, since Gary Leitzell has reduced his salary by 1.92 percent as of 2010, his salary is $44,470.40. Parma mayor Dean Dipiero earns less than the police and fire chief in the city with a salary of $91,520 annually as of 2011.

In Canton, Ohio, home of the NFL Hall of Fame, mayor William J. Healy II earns $95,651 annually as of 2009. As of 2011, he is still Canton's mayor. Jay Williams, who is serving his second term as mayor of Youngstown, followed other Ohio mayors by reducing his salary by 10 percent in 2009. As of 2009, he earns more than $100,000 annually. Tony Krasienko, mayor of Lorain, earns approximately $96,500 as of 2010.

Other Salaries

Despite a population of only 39,000 people, the city of Lima, Ohio pays its mayor $103,763 annually as of 2008. A January 2011 article by the Morning Journal reports an annual salary of $82,500 for Avon Lake mayor Karl Zuber. It adds that the city's next mayor could make an additional $3,300 annually. A January 2011 article for the Columbus Local News cites a 2009 study by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission that lists the salaries of the mayors of Whitehall, Bexley and Reynoldsburg at $77,500, $90,522 and $97,801 respectively.
