How to Change the Batteries in a One Touch Can Opener

The One Touch can opener is your best friend in the kitchen if you hate the mess and sharp edges that go hand in hand with manual can openers. It is battery-operated, but the batteries, AA alkaline or rechargeable, are easy to change when necessary. This type of can opener is ideal for the elderly or anyone with weak hands. You can easily replace the batteries and release a stuck opener, which sometimes happens if the battery level is very low.

Take out the old Batteries

1. Slide open the battery compartment cover on the underside of the can opener and remove the old batteries.

Insert the new Batteries

2. Place 2 AA alkaline or rechargeable batteries into the battery compartment. Position these according to the polarity (+/-) direction.

Replace the Cover

3. Replace the battery compartment cover.

Warning

Make sure the motor has stopped completely before removing the battery compartment cover. During replacement, never press the button at the rear of the can opener and the button at the top of the can opener to avoid turning it on. Always replace both batteries at the same time. Never mix old and new batteries or batteries of different types. Always dispose of old batteries correctly. Alkaline batteries can be safely disposed of with normal household waste, but rechargeable batteries should be recycled according to U.S. federal guidelines. Recycle used batteries whenever possible at a local recycling center or drop-off location.

Releasing a Stuck Opener

If the battery level is very low or a can rim is deformed, the can opener may become jammed and unfit for use.

Activate the Reverse

1. Locate the small button at the rear of the can opener. Press this button to activate the reverse, which will release the can. Keep pressing the button until the can opener stops.

Use the Stall Release Screw

2. If the reverse button does not release the can opener, the batteries may be depleted. Insert a 4 or 5 mm crosshead or flat screwdriver into the stall release screw, which is located next to the cutter. Slowly turn the screwdriver in an anti-clockwise direction until it releases the can.

Reset the Can Opener

3. After replacing the batteries, press and hold the reverse button and the can-detect button located next to the cutter simultaneously to reset the can opener to its starting position.

Warning

Avoid contact with moving parts of the can opener. Keep hands, hair, clothing and jewelry away from moving parts to avoid injury. Never try to adjust or move the cutter screw. Closely supervise children if they are using the can opener.
