How Does a Business Check to See If Someone Has Graduated?

According to the Society for Human Resource Management or SHRM, more than 53 percent of job applicants falsify information on their resume. One of the areas that many applicants lie about is their educational background. While it is common to embellish these details, employers can find out when you are not truthful.

Background Checks

One of the ways that a company could check to see if you graduated is to run a background check. With many background checking services, you can get information such as criminal records, credit history and educational background. The company must pay a fee to the background checking company to get this information. Once the report is received, the employer can see when you attended school and whether you received a diploma from the school.

Calling the School

In some cases, companies will handle this part of the process internally. Instead of hiring someone to run a background check, the human resources department will check up on you. This simply involves calling the school that you listed on your resume. Once the school is contacted, the employer can ask whether you graduated and if you attended during the years listed on your resume. This is a common practice with many schools and employers.

In some cases, it can be difficult to verify the education of a potential employee. Some schools have strict privacy policies regarding what information can be released. For example, some schools will only release information to the actual student instead of any other outside parties. In other cases, it can take several weeks or months to get any information out of the records department of a school. When this happens, the company may not be able to verify in a timely manner.

When an individual applies for a job, it is important for the company to verify his educational background. This is especially true when working with a specialized job. If the individual is not qualified for the job with the proper education, it can end up costing the company a lot of money. The fraud will eventually be discovered and at that point, the company will have to invest in finding another employee and training him as well.
