10X12 Wood Shed Supply List

Building a 10-by-12 foot wood shed requires a variety of materials. Although this is a common-sized shed, you still need to have the proper wood, hardware, siding and roofing materials. This includes framing lumber, plywood and foundation materials such as concrete and rebar.

  1. Foundation

    • The 10-by-12 foot shed foundation serves as the base of the structure. The subfloor should measure 2.3 cubic yards of crushed stone or gravel. The shed's floor is a concrete slab measuring 4.6 cubic yards. You'll need 120 square feet of wire mesh. Metal rebars should include four 10-foot rebars and four 12-foot rebars. You'll also need six 12-inch diameter concrete forms. Two 24-inch #4 rebars are needed for added reinforcement in the colder, northern climates.


    • To build the shed's roof, you'll need a variety of rafters, ties, decking sheets and roofing. You'll need 14 2 by 6 by 8-foot rafters and one 2 by 8 by 14-foot ridge support beam. The gable ends and roof overhand will use eight 2 by 4 by 8-foot barge rafters. Seven collar ties will be used. Each tie measures 2 by 4 by 8-feet. You'll use seven sheets of 1/2-inch by 4 by 8-foot exterior plywood. You'll need 200 square feet of shingles to complete the roof.


    • The shed's walls include plates, studs and headers. Sheathing and siding are also needed. You'll need four 2 by 4 by 12-foot boards. pressure-treated sill plates and 44 2 by 4 by 8-foot studs, The frame will also consist of four 2 by 4 by 12-foot boards and five 2 by 4 by 10-foot plates. The plans include five headers: four 2 by 6 by 12-foot headers and one 1 by 2 by 6-foot double header. The double header will be above the shed's window. The plans also include 10 sheets of 1/2-inch by 4 by 8-foot exterior grade plywood. You'll need 230 square feet of vinyl or wood siding.


    • The shed will require hardware to secure your structure. This includes: 12 5/8-inch by 10 inch anchor bolts, 45 feet of 8-inch copper flashing to protect the shed's interior from the weather elements. Fourteen rafter ties secure the rafter and studs. Six 8-inch strap hinges are used for the shed door.
