Celebrate your family members on Grandparents Day.

Grandparents Day is celebrated the first Sunday following Labor Day in September. The special day dedicated to grandparents provides an opportunity to show your own grandparents how much they mean to you. Hold a gathering or party for your grandparents that showcases their importance in your life. Create a theme for the party to coordinate the decorations and entertainment. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Era Themes

    • Choose a specific era, such as the Roaring '20s, the swinging '60s or even the sock hop era of the 1950s and use the era to transform the party space. Choose an era that has specific meaning or appeal to the grandparents. For example, if they graduated from high school in the 1950s, decorate the room to look like a '50s diner or ice cream parlor. Serve refreshments on roller skates and rent a jukebox to play '50s tunes.

    Newspaper Theme

    • Transform the party space to resemble an old-fashioned newsroom. Place typewriters on tables, hang homemade and actual newspapers on the walls, and scatter them around the room. Pass out newsboy-style caps for guests to where. As entertainment, have each child and grandchild of the grandparents write their own "news story." The story is a personal memory of the grandparents that is especially meaningful. Read each story aloud to the grandparents.

    Royal Theme

    • Since grandparents are often the backbone and glue of a family unit, make them feel like royalty for a day. Greet them at the door with a crown and lead them over to a seat of honor or throne in the center of the room. Tell them that their every wish is your command and cater to all their needs. This could include serving them refreshments, providing a back massage or simply fluffing their pillows. Decorate the room with gold, purple and red linens and balloons, filling the room in the colors of royalty.

    Family Tree

    • Since the grandparents are a root to your family tree, illustrate this concept in party form. Create a large tree on a wall using poster board. Give each child and grandchild a sheet of construction paper to write down their favorite qualities of the grandparents. Fill in the poster board tree with the paper sheets. Place potted trees around the room and hang photos of your grandparents over the years on them. Draw a giant family tree, highlight your grandparents' names on it, and display it on a wall or table.
