What Are Female Haircuts From the 1970's? thumbnail
The natural look was in during the '70s.

In the 1950s and 1960s, women's haircuts were neat, polished and difficult to style and maintain. Women spent hours wearing curlers and working with hairspray. Women's haircuts in the 1970s represented rebellion from this polished look. Seventies hairdos were much more natural and easy to care for. Hippie fashion also influenced hairstyles and prompted women to want to look more carefree. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Feathered

    • The feathered haircut proved to be one of the most popular styles of the decade. Made popular by actress Farrah Fawcett, the feathered haircut was also simply referred to as the Farrah. This cut consisted of shoulder length hair that was parted down the center and coupled with soft bangs. Stylists would then cut feathery layers around the head and face. The layers were blown dry in an upward, outward motion, creating backwards curls that softy framed the face.

    Shag

    • The shag haircut was worn by both men and women during the 1970s. Jane Fonda and actress Florence Henderson of "The Brady Bunch" were among the famous women who sported this haircut. The shag was enjoyed for its ease and versatility. Women could literally wash and wear this hairstyle, as it required little maintenance. The shag was seen in varying lengths. Some had bangs while others did not. Women would occasionally decorate this haircut with colorful plastic barrettes. The shag was achieved by cutting long soft layers around the head and thinning toward the bottom. This created a messy, shaggy look.

    Wedge

    • Ice skater Dorothy Hamill famously popularized the wedge haircut. This cut was very versatile as it could look formal or sporty, but it was also very easy to maintain. This short haircut hung just below the ears where it tapered into a wedged shape toward the back of the head. Women with any hair type could wear the wedge, although those with curly or wavy hair found it more difficult. The wedge could have a full bang, or lighter bangs that swept to one side.

    Page Boy

    • The page boy was another shorter haircut that was popular for women during the 1970s. The page boy included a full bang and hair that stopped at the back of the neck. This cut was designed so that all the hair, including the bangs would curl under and toward the face. This haircut was not only popular for women, but also young girls.

    Long and Natural

    • Other haircuts during the 1970s required little to no maintenance at all. These cuts were seldom trimmed as they were supposed to appear as long and natural as possible. Women would wear straight, sleek, long hair with or without bangs. Long hair was parted down the center, but it could also have an off-center part. The afro was another popular cut of the decade. This cut was best for extremely curly or frizzy hair, as it was allowed to extend straight out from the head.
