A kidney-shaped pool is an ideal option if you want to add plants to your pool area.

When planning an in-ground pool for your yard, there are many design factors to consider. One of the most significant decisions that you must make is its shape. The available space in your yard may limit your choices, but you should also consider the overall look that you wish to create for your landscape and how you primarily intend to use the pool. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Oval

    • An oval-shaped pool provides a classic look for your yard. You can choose from a variety of sizes, but a typical oval pool measures 13 x 25 feet or 14 x 29 feet. The ends of the pool are rounded while the sides feature a straight expanse. It is an ideal option if your family plans to use the pool for water sports, such as volleyball or basketball, because there is plenty of open space in the middle of the pool. While it is not the standard size or shape, you can use an oval pool for swimming laps as well.

    Kidney Shaped

    • Similar to the oval but featuring a slight side indentation at one end of the pool to give a curved appearance, a typical kidney-shaped pool measures 14 x 25 feet or 17 x 33 feet. However, the design lends itself to customization, so you can have it fitted to the space available in your yard. A kidney-shaped pool has a very natural look and is an effective option if you would like to incorporate plants and flowers into your pool's landscape because the indented space provides an ideal spot for planting.

    Roman

    • A Roman pool has a rectangular shape, but the four corners are rounded inward and the ends have a circular shape for a more decorative appearance. This type of pool has an elegant, classic appearance and may be enhanced by tile trim along its waterline to accentuate the shape. It is an ideal option if you would like to give your yard a Mediterranean-inspired makeover. However, the style does not detract from the pool's function since there is plenty of space for swimming, sports and other activities.

    Figure 8

    • As its name implies, a figure-8 pool is a modified oval shape with indentations on both sides at the center. However, unlike the number 8, the pool shape does not necessarily have to be the same size at both ends. You can use the shape to create distinct deep and shallow ends, so multiple activities can occur in the pool at the same time. Like a kidney-shaped pool, it also provides ideal spots for planting flowers, shrubs and other plants because of the indentations.
