The horror genre works in the virtual format just as it does on film; it serves to add suspense and tension into your entertainment experience. Virtual horror titles have done well on video game consoles and computers alike. Many games in the genre have inspired sequels and garnered high amounts of critical acclaim.

"Resident Evil" Series

IGN gave "Resident Evil 4" a 9.8 out of 10 rating upon its release. The "Resident Evil" series of games puts you in the role of multiple heroes armed with a variety of weapons in an attempt to put an end to a zombie outbreak. "Resident Evil 4," the most-acclaimed title in the series, gives you the additional tasks of saving the President's daughter.
"Silent Hill" Series

The first "Silent Hill" game received a 9.0 out of 10 score from IGN. You play as a man who wakes up after a car accident to find himself surrounded by fog, ghosts and monsters. You must guide him around the deserted town to find answers as to where his family has gone and what he needs to do to survive. Other games in the series feature similar plot lines with new characters.

In "Dead Space," you play as an engineer who has to figure out why no one can communicate with a space ship. You wind up stuck in the ship with a variety of mutant creatures out to kill you. To survive, you must figure out what mysterious messages you receive mean. "Dead Space" got a 9.0 out of 10 rating from GameSpot.
"Left 4 Dead"

"Left 4 Dead" got a 9.0 out of 10 rating from IGN. Based on a zombie outbreak, you must fight in teams to keep each other away from harm and reach a safe base. "Left 4 Dead" gained fame for being the first game of its kind in which you can fight not only against the zombies but as one of them.
"BioShock"

"BioShock" is a horror game that begins with a character who is lost in the middle of nowhere following a violent plane accident. Your character finds a secret underwater city where the civilization has gone awry and monsters run amok. You must solve the mystery of what happened while trying to escape with your life. GameSpot gave "BioShock" a 9.0 rating out of 10.
"Castlevania" Series

"Castlevania" games start you out in Count Dracula's castle with no apparent way out. In each one, you must fight villains and creatures while solving a mystery and reaching safety. "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" received an 8.9 out of 10 score from GameSpot. You play as Dracula's son and must derail your father to save a missing hero.
