Marshmallows come in a variety of sizes and colors.

Most children love marshmallows, which are an inexpensive and tasty snack. Whether you are planning a lesson at school or trying to prevent boredom at home, you can create a few crafts using marshmallows. Crafts also help children build fine motor skills and teach them to use their imagination. With a few bags of marshmallows and some supplies, you have all you need to get kids working on some entertaining crafts.

  1. Easy Crafts

    • Make a marshmallow star by using marshmallows and toothpicks. Tell the children to put six miniature marshmallows on a toothpick, leaving one end of the toothpick showing. Do this with five or six toothpicks. Place the stick end of the toothpicks into a large marshmallow to resemble a star. For another easy craft, give the children large marshmallows and let them draw faces on the marshmallows with markers. For added decoration, they can use licorice to make hair on their marshmallow heads.

    Building Crafts

    • Give each child a bowl of marshmallows and stick pretzels to build a marshmallow tower. Tell the children to use their creativity and imagination to build the best tower they can. Use small and large marshmallows, as well as small pretzels sticks and large pretzel rods. For a variation, the children can use frosting as glue to build a marshmallow house. Give each child a paper plate to use as a base and have her use the frosting as "glue" to stick the marshmallows together. Have children make a marshmallow igloo by placing a paper bowl face down and cutting a small hole on the side at the bottom (for the igloo door). They can use the frosting and marshmallows to cover the bowl to look like an igloo.

    Holiday Crafts

    • According to the Campfire Marshmallow website, children can make spooky pops for Halloween with large marshmallows and wooden skewers. Mix food coloring with white icing to paint on the marshmallows and icing pens to decorate them. For a ghost pop, cover the marshmallow in white frosting and use a black icing pen to draw on the mouth and eyes. For a pumpkin, paint orange icing on the marshmallow and use the black icing pen to draw different jack-o'-lantern faces. For Christmas, the children can use marshmallows to create snowmen. Attach three large marshmallows with toothpicks and use toothpicks or pretzels to create the arms. Use icing pens to draw on the eyes, nose, mouth and buttons.

    Edible Crafts

    • Children can make edible apples smiles, as suggested by Peppers Pollywogs. Have them use peanut butter to "glue" marshmallows to an apple slice to resemble teeth. After they finish, they can eat their projects. For another edible craft, try gooey marshmallow frosting. With adult assistance, the children can place a large marshmallow on top of a cupcake or a cookie and place it in the microwave until it melts. This will create a marshmallow frosting most children will enjoy.
