Problems With Autocomplete & Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer's AutoComplete feature is one of the best improvements applied to this browser since its inception.

AutoComplete is an Internet Explorer feature that records information a user types into Web-based forms and stores it on the computer's hard drive. Turning on this feature in your Internet Explorer browser will save you a great deal of time because you don't have to retype basic information for each Web form you fill out. However, AutoComplete has some known issues.

  1. Internet Explorer Issue

    • The Autocomplete feature does not always function in Internet Explorer 7. This frustrates those who are used to the time-saving tool working in previous browsers. The problem can be addressed by changing a setting in the registry.

    Cause

    • This AutoComplete issue shows up when the value of the FormSuggest entry in the registry is set to 0. To determine if this is the case, check the numerical entry in the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel

The registry settings get changed or modified when a new application is installed on the system, so it is beneficial to have a basic understanding of your computer's registry configuration, how it works and why it fails.

    Solution

    • To reactivate the AutoComplete feature of Internet Explorer, change the value of the FormSuggest registry entry to 1. Before you make the change, be aware that modifying the registry erroneously in any way can cause serious problems to your machine. Proceed with these steps to resolve this issue:

Click "Start" and "Run," enter "regedit" and click "OK." In Registry Editor, find and click the following subkey:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel

In the Details pane, double-click "FormSuggest."

In the Value data box, enter 1, then click "OK" to confirm your change. Access your email and test if Internet Explorer remembers your user name and password for your account.

    Keep It On

    • If the AutoComplete feature is not working, verify that the feature is actually turned on. Open the Internet Options dialog box and view the Content tab to assess if the feature is on. Follow these steps to check your Internet Explorer settings:

      Run Internet Explorer.

On the Tools menu, select "Internet Options."

      Click the Content tab.

Under Personal information, choose AutoComplete. Select the "Usernames and passwords" check box (if it is not already chosen), choose the "Prompt me to save passwords" check box (if it is not already chosen) and click OK.

Click OK once more to close the Internet Options dialog box. Restart Internet Explorer and do your test to confirm if the AutoComplete feature is working properly.
