What Household Items Can Be Used as Tin Foil?

Aluminum foil is specifically designed to withstand high temperatures such as those found in the oven or on the grill. The lightweight and thin material wraps around nearly any object, forming a seal for leftovers and storage of food. When you run out of aluminum foil, use other items from around the house as a makeshift alternative. Protect and store food and even cook dishes in the oven with these household items.

Parchment Paper

  • Parchment paper is a type of specially treated paper that can withstand the high heat from an oven. Use parchment paper as an alternative to aluminum foil when you need foil for baked dishes. Cover baking or cookie sheets with a thin layer of parchment paper. The paper keeps cookies and other items from sticking to the pans. Lay items on top of the parchment paper and fold the paper into a small pouch for cooking dishes in the oven or on the grill. When using parchment paper on the grill, make sure it doesn't touch the direct flame, as it might catch on fire.

Wax Paper

  • Wax paper is essentially paper with a thin layer of wax added to the top. The wax melts when it reaches a high temperature. Although you can't use wax paper in the oven or on the grill, you can use it for storing food just as you would aluminum foil. Place a small piece of waxed paper on top of a bowl or plate, making sure that the edges overlap the bowl. Wrap a rubber band or string around the top, securing the paper to the container. Use waxed paper when steaming or cooking vegetables in the microwave, or to store cheese in the refrigerator.

Plastic Wrap

  • Plastic wrap or cling wrap is an alternative to aluminum foil for food storage. The wrap is specifically designed to cling to almost any surface. Store food in small bowls or plates and cover with a piece of the cling wrap. Press the wrap onto the bottom of the bowl or plate to keep your leftovers safe and fresh.

Funky Alternatives

  • Look for other items around the house that work the same way as aluminum foil. Cover dishes in the refrigerator with a shower cap. The elastic of the cap keeps it from coming loose. When cooking on a grill, consider covering the grate with an old cookie sheet or baking pan. The metal reaches a high heat that cooks the food, but the food doesn't touch the grill.
