There are many types of ornamental grasses, including varieties with small purple flowers.

Using ornamental grasses as part of your landscape or container design can add visual interest and texture year-round. Many ornamental grasses bloom with colorful flower stalks, though most tend to be in shades of white to pink. Selecting ornamental grasses that bloom in shades of purple flowers adds a splash of unexpected color to your landscape design. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Quaking Grass

    • Briza media "Quaking Grass" is an easy-care perennial ornamental grass grown in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 4 to 10. With attractive green foliage that reaches 12 to 18 inches high, Quaking Grass flower spikes rise above to bloom delicate purple flowers that will gently quake with the slightest breeze. The plant has a long, continuous flowering season from June to August. The flower stems can be harvested for fresh cut or dried floral arrangements.

    Mondo Grass

    • "Mondo Grass," Ophiopogon japonicus, is frequently used as an alternative to turf lawn grass because of its ability to fill in an area with soft and graceful looking 6- to 16-inch-high mounds of grass. Sometimes referred to as Monkey Grass, Mondo Grass blooms bright spikes of tiny purple flowers in late spring and early summer. An easy-care ornamental grass, Mondo Grass is a favorite in USDA hardiness zones 7 to 10, but it may need winter protection in colder zones.

    Purple Moor Grass

    • Molinia caerulea, "Purple Moor Grass" is a spectacular ornamental grass for landscapes wanting large mounts of narrow arching foliage that can reach several feet high. Above the attractive leaves, tall flower spikes of small, wispy, purple-colored flowers emerge throughout the summer months. Hardy in USDA zones 4 to 8, Purple Moor Grass flower plumes are often harvested for fresh cut and dried flower arrangements.

    Fountain Grass

    • Small flowers that grow in clusters often give an appearance of one large flower spike or plume. Thus is the case with Pennisetum alopecuroides, "Perennial Fountain Grass." Hardy in USDA zones 5 to 9, Fountain Grass grows in an attractive foliage mass of gently arched leaves from 1 to 3 feet high. In late summer and into fall and winter, Fountain Grass blooms an abundance of tall, graceful flower spikes of soft-looking whitish-purple flowers that gradually fade to a coppery-purple tone. The flower spikes catch the slightest breeze to shimmer and sway, adding interest to your landscape design.
