A person with sociable traits is at ease holding court in a variety of settings.

For some, sociable traits are a natural gift, while others have had to learn and practice acquiring them. Either way, these traits are significant in that they can greatly enhance your quality of life on all levels that go beyond being popular and well liked. Both your mental and physical health stand to benefit as well.

  1. Good Health

    • A 15-year study of baboons done by the University of Pennsylvania in the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana revealed in 2007 that there are health benefits to being more sociable. Female baboons with strong social ties stood to live longer than their reclusive counterparts. While this is not concrete evidence that the same thing translates 100 percent to humans, Joan Silk of UCLA said that the study does parallel similar findings with humans.

    Less Stress

    • Leading an active life alone can reduce stress, but doing so with others enhances the positive effects. Whether it is loved ones or a group of friendly acquaintances you just met, sociability helps in terms of coping with stress to connect and relate to people as opposed to leading a reclusive life. Moreover, it usually helps to have someone to vent to.

    Less Loneliness

    • Spending time with loved ones and established friends poses obvious benefits to easing loneliness, but you stand to do even better when you have sociable traits. The more comfortable you are feeling at ease with starting conversations and fostering connections with people you just met, the less likely you are to battle loneliness. Life pulls you in all sorts of directions and you may lose touch with established friends; however, having the sociable traits to meet new people can boost your odds of never being lonely.

    More Opportunities

    • Not only do sociable traits give you the ability to meet new people, they also open other doors in your life. For example, the easier it is to socialize with people at the company picnic, the better your chances of networking and perhaps getting ahead in your career. In addition, there are the benefits that may spill over into your dating life. Not only might you find it easier to approach someone, she may in turn find you and your sociable traits -- namely, your confidence -- very attractive.
