The shower curtain sets the tone for the whole bathroom.

Shower curtains are the largest piece of decor in most bathrooms. Available in many colors, patterns and styles this piece can set the tone for the whole room. Most shower curtains come in one standard size, but those with special considerations may need a different size to properly fit their enclosure. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Typical Sizes

    • The standard length for shower curtains purchased commercially is 72 inches, or 6 feet, square. Curtains of this style typically hang from hooks or rings on the shower rod, causing the top of the curtain to fall just below the shower curtain rod. Some specialty lines also carry shower curtains in extended sizes that are longer or wider than the standard curtain.

    Considerations

    • The location of the shower curtain rod is the most important factor in determining the proper size for the shower curtain. Most rods can be moved up or down fairly easily to accommodate the positioning of the shower head. Taller individuals may prefer a higher shower head and thus a higher curtain to contain the spray of water. Though standard curtain rods are perfectly straight, bowed curtain rods are increasing in popularity and availability. These rods bend outward away from the shower to allow more room for showering. Bowed curtain rods require wider curtains to accommodate the additional length of the curtain rod.

    Determination

    • To properly measure for a new shower curtain, the user should first measure from the underside of the curtain rod to about an inch above the floor. This will determine the proper length for the curtain. For the width of the curtain, measure the entire length of the curtain rod and add a few inches so the curtain can reach the wall on either side.

    Styles

    • Some distinct styles of shower curtains require special measurements. Bathtub and shower enclosures that are recessed into the wall may have the shower curtain hanging from the wall instead of the shower curtain rod. In this case, the outer curtain is more decorative than functional, while the liner hangs alone from the rod to keep water in. These curtains are usually extra long and may be secured with tie backs similar to window curtains.
