Vinegar is an acidic liquid that is popular in cooking and for other uses in the kitchen and home. Fermentation of sugar creates vinegar. Apple or apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar and distilled vinegar are common vinegars with different appearances and uses. Does this Spark an idea?

    • Vinegars come from a huge variety of food sources, from fruits to barley. Wine, balsamic, rice, malt and various fruit vinegars are the most common. Fermented barley creates malt vinegar, which is very common in the United States, while Asian cooks use rice vinegar regularly.

    Uses

    • Vinegar's most common uses are culinary. Vinegar combined with oil makes a basic salad dressing. It is also a common ingredient in commercially prepared sauces, such as Tabasco sauce. A common cleaning agent, vinegar will shine glass, clean floors and remove rust. As it has antiseptic properties, it also has medicinal uses.

    Apple and Apple Cider Vinegar

    • A process of fermenting apple wine creates apple vinegar, while fermentation of apple cider creates apple cider vinegar. Since both wine and cider are already fermented, both apple and apple cider vinegar are very acidic. They are also both brownish-red in color.

    Rice Vinegar

    • Fermentation of red yeast rice creates the red variety of rice vinegar, while fermentation of black glutinous rice creates the black variety. Fermentation of plain white rice creates white rice vinegar. Rice vinegar has a relatively low acid content and bland flavor.

    Distilled Vinegar

    • Distilled vinegar can be created from nearly any raw ingredient that contains sugar, though it's commonly made from alcohol. It is more acidic than other vinegars and is colorless. It is mainly used for scientific purposes and for cleaning but it an be found in many commercially prepared food products, because it is very inexpensive to make. It has very little flavor.
